Puchkine’s connections’ decision to supplement him for Sunday's Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at Deauville reaped rich reward with the rank outsider running out a dominant two and a half length victor in the 1400m contest for three year old colts and fillies.

Alain Jathiere’s team decided to supplement the Starspangledbanner colt despite his well-beaten fourth in the G3 Prix Paul de Moussac at Longchamp on June 9.

And after Puchkine scored with a career best performance, Jathiere's racing manager Nicolas de Watrigant said: "We always hoped for the best from this horse as he had big potential.”

Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget who enjoyed a 1-2 in the race, Puchkine won at odds of 35-1 under Ioritz Mendizabal, who timed his ride to perfection as the pair ran home gamely to win ahead of the better-fancied Havana Cigar, the ride of Christophe Soumillon. Yann Barberot’s Beauvatier was a further neck back in third under Maxime Guyon.

Puchkine had finished ninth in the French 2,000 Guineas in his only ever Group 1 outing before his fourth in the Paul de Moussac.

And Mendizabal rode him assertively, taking up a spot behind leader Zandy. Once asked for an effort Puchkine flew to easily gain the ascendancy and win.

De Watrigant added: "In the Poule d'Essai des Poulains he didn't really like the soft ground, he was pulling a lot. The straight track suited him well. He always looked like a good horse in the mornings and that's why we made the decision to supplement him."

Puchkine is likely to run in the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on August 4 next.
