Thore Hammer Hansen’s gamble of switching Palladium to the stand side rail paid off in the form of a sensational last gasp success in the Group 1 Idee 155th Deutsches Derby at Hamburg.

Victory ensured a second straight success for the Gleneagles colt’s owners Liberty Racing in the 2400m contest. Racing in third Hammer switched his mount to the stands side barrier for the final dash as Markus Klug’s Andrasch Starke ridden Borna refused to yield his long-held position at the front along the far rail.

However, at the other end, with none now in front, spending every bit of energy, Palladium under Hansen edged forward with every stride to score by a neck. Augustus was a further head back in third for trainer Waldemar Hickst and jockey Michael Abik.

Winning rider Hansen said: “I am speechless and I don't have the words to express how I feel.

“Thanks to Henk Grewe for supplying me with one of the best moments of my career. This is absolutely brilliant.

“I just can't believe it. There's a lot of people out there who would want to be in the position I am in right now, I am so lucky to be here. I can't wait to see what happens next.”
